It was a life of hustle and bustle, jostle and push, here to-day, and a hundred miles away tomorrow. The small boy, who was up before the first pale streak of light appeared in the east, and off to the freight-yards to see the four or five long circus trains come in, could have told you something about the marvelous way in which circus-men handle their strange caravan.
They manifested by the usual signs their impatience to have the performance begin, and I confess that I shared this, though I did not take part in the demonstration. I have no intention of following the events seriatim. Front time to time during their progress I renewed my old one-sided acquaintance with the circus-men.
That was the way the circus-men got their dwarfs, and the India-rubber man kept himself limber by rubbing his joints with rattlesnake oil. A snake could charm a person, and when you saw a snake you had to kill it before it could get its eye on you or it would charm you.
But when the crocodile saw what a nice house it was with all the different places for the different kinds of animals he too wanted to live with the Doctor. He asked couldn't he sleep in the fish-pond at the bottom of the garden, if he promised not to eat the fish. When the circus-men came to take him back he got so wild and savage that he frightened them away.
