"If," said Dick Avenel to himself, as he returned fretfully homeward "if a man like me, who has done so much for British industry and go-a-head principles, is to be catawampously champed up by a mercenary, selfish cormorant of a capitalist like that interloping blockhead in drab breeches, Tom Dyce, all I can say is, that the sooner this cursed old country goes to the dogs, the better pleased I shall be.

And later: "It really was dreadful. The train was broken all to bits, and nearly every one on board was hurt, catawampously chawed up in fact, as you Americans would say. Why, what are you all laughing at? Don't you say it?"

So we regard his reference to "almighty smash" and "catawampously chawed up" as specimens of the language used in America, and his disparagement of the English in vogue here, less as a manifestation of a desire to misrepresent, or even a willingness to sneer, than as an amusing exhibition of utter ignorance. In what part of America and from what lips did Dr. Ingleby ever hear these phrases?
