From the low point beneath Calshott Castle a flying machine rose suddenly, circled round in a wide sweep and then sped swiftly eastwards towards Spit-head. In the roads off Cowes we could discern many yachts at anchor. One of the Hamburg-American lines crept cautiously up the Solent. A belated cruiser, four-funneled, black and grim, on her way to join the Fleet, followed the huge German steamer.
You take a falling tide at the head of the water, near Southampton Town, and if you are not quick with your business it is checked in two hours and you meet a strange flood, the second flood, before you have rounded Calshott Castle. Then there is a Charter of Newcastle.
Soon after the steamer passed Calshott Castle and got into the waters of the Solent, late in the afternoon, the comfort of those on board was not increased by their getting into a thick white woolly sea-fog, which had crept over the Isle of Wight from the Channel.
And so amidst excitement and sorrow, laughter and tears, the good ship drops down the Southampton Water, past Netley Hospital soon to receive many of them back and Calshott Castle, past the Needles and out into the open Channel, and fifteen hundred fighting men are on their way to South Africa. =A New Feat in Britain's History.= Week after week this was the programme.
