For one imitation of Spenser or Shakespeare in the Paradise Lost it would be easy to adduce ten not mere coincidences of matter, but direct transferences of Sylvester's Du Bartas. While Lucretius was a boy, Cicero published the version in Latin hexameters of the Phaenomena and Prognostica of Aratus to which reference has already been made.
The influence of Virgil over prose reaches in him its most marked degree. Direct transferences of phrase are not infrequent; and throughout, as one reads the Histories, one is reminded of the Aeneid, not only by particular phrases, but by a more indefinable quality permeating the style.
The supervening philosophic comment reconsiders those earlier, physically erotic, impulses which had prompted the sonnet in voluble Italian, entirely to the advantage of their abstract, incorporeal, theoretic, equivalents. Yet if it is after all but a prose comment, it betrays no lack of the natural stuff out of which such mystic transferences must be made.
It is then converted into kinetic energy as the needs of the body require. Potential energy is converted into heat and heat into motion. *From the Sun to the Cells.*—It thus appears that the body comes into possession of energy, and is able to use it, through a series of transferences and transformations that can be traced back to the sun.
But this was altogether unnecessary; he was made to understand that such transferences as it would occasion were superfluous, and so one of his men stepped into our boat to help me to row back against the current; and for this I was not unthankful. Our return took, it appeared to me, a much longer time than everything else which had happened.
The difference is one of successive transferences and the period of time involved in evolutionary process. For example, it has taken a certain length of time for this cellular element in my hand to pass through the various periods of metabolism. At one period it was in the mineral kingdom subject to changes and transferences in the mineral state.
