The principal part of the first Shawanese village Shannoah Town, in the old journals was below the Scioto's mouth, on the site of Alexandria; it was the chief town of this considerable tribe, and here Gist was warned back, when in March, 1751, he ventured thus far while inspecting lands for the Ohio Company.

These deserters came up from the lower Shannoah town with one Brown, an Indian trader, and were going to Philadelphia. About three o'clock this evening the half king came to town.
The half king and Monakatoocha, came very early and begged me to stay one day more: for notwithstanding they had used all the diligence in their power, the Shannoah chiefs had not brought the wampum they ordered, but would certainly be in to night; if not, they would delay me no longer, but would send it after us as soon as they arrived.
