"The duke has lost state, fortune, and liberty, and not one of his works has been completed." In these last melancholy words we read Lodovico Sforza's epitaph, pronounced over him by Leonardo the Florentine. Luzio-Renier, op. cit., p. 672.

See the correspondence in Rosmini's Life of Guarino da Verona. This claim of the House of Orleans to Milan was one source of French interference in Italian affairs. Judged by Italian custom, Sforza's claim through Bianca was as good as that of the Orleans princes through Valentina, since bastardy was no real bar in the peninsula.

There certainly existed that reasonable motive to actuate him, but not a particle of evidence against him. Next rumour had it that Cardinal Ascanio Sforza's was the hand that had done this work, and with this rumour Rome was busy for months.

But during the two months that had passed between the surrender of Novarra and the arrival of the French army before the town, there had been a very great change in the face of things, because Ludovico Sforza's treasure was now exhausted.

Besides those which will follow in these pages, it is enough to notice the murder of Giovanni Francesco Pico, by his nephew, at Mirandola ; the murder of his uncle by Oliverotto da Fermo; the assassination of Giovanni Varano by his brothers at Camerino ; Ostasio da Polenta's fratricide ; Obizzo da Polenta's fratricide in the next generation, and the murder of Ugolino Gonzaga by his brothers; Gian Francesco Gonzaga's murder of his wife; the poisoning of Francesco Sforza's first wife, Polissena, Countess of Montalto, with her little girl, by her aunt; and the murder of Galeotto Manfredi, by his wife, at Faenza .
