They will go over a five-barred gate, as well as the best hunter; are equally good for the plough, or for threshing corn, and the white are the most esteemed. The Gayal affords the richest milk, and prefers feeding on trees. It also comes from India; it is gentle even in its wild state, and runs away from, but never faces man.
It is a large animal, more like the common ox than any of the buffaloes; and it is also less fierce in its disposition than the latter. Next to the gayal is the Gam also a forest-dwelling ox, of large size; and, like the other, browsing upon the leaves and twigs of trees. The gam inhabits several forest-covered mountains in Central India, where it is only found wild.
In Africa that list should include the eland, white rhinoceros, blessbok, bontebok, kudu, giraffes and southern elephants, sable antelope, rhinoceros south of the Zambesi, leucoryx antelope and whale-headed stork. In Asia it should include the great Indian rhinoceros and its allied species, the burrhel, the Nilgiri tahr and the gayal. The David deer of Manchuria already is extinct in a wild state.
These, the true oxen, as they are sometimes termed, now exist only in domesticated breeds of cattle. The three species gaur, gayal and banteng inhabit Indo-Malayan countries, and all of them are dark brown with white stockings. In old bulls of the African species the horns meet at their base and completely cover the forehead. In the arni of India they are enormously long.

Of this tribe there are eight species: Bos urus, the ancient bison. Bos bison, the American buffalo. Bos moschatus, the musk ox. Bos frontalis, the gayal. Bos grunniens, the grunting ox. There is the Gayal or Jungly-gau, which inhabits the eastern parts of Bengal, especially the mountains that separate this province from Arracan. Of this there is a tame and wild species the latter an inhabitant of forests, living rather upon the shoots of trees than upon grass.
