We may note especially the vast area in Enfida, completely covered with dolmens, one hundred of which are still standing, and in excellent preservation, whilst the ruins of others strew the soil, bringing up their original number to at least three thousand. Those described by M. Girard de Rialle are yet more interesting.

There had been also many commercial difficulties some honest, some dishonest; but what led to the acute stage which these difficulties and differences assumed in 1881 was the purchase, in 1880, by the Societe Marseillaise, for 100,000 L, of a large tract of land known as the Enfida subject, it had been stipulated, 'to the provisions of the local law. But the purchase was no sooner publicly declared than its legality was disputed; a Maltese therefore an English subject named Levy claiming that by the local law he had a right of pre-emption and was prepared to buy.

A. M. Broadley, who was at that time acting as the correspondent of the Times, and whose ability had enabled him to create a diplomatic question, which he called the Enfida Case, out of a trumpery lawsuit in which he acted for a rich Arab, called, if I remember aright, General Benayid. Mr. Broadley subsequently became known to fame for the active part he took in defending Arabi Pasha at Cairo.
