The only other pachydermatous animal besides the tapir indigenous to South America is the little truculent peccary a herd of which creatures is more feared by the natives than the jaguar, boa, or anaconda. There are two species the Dicotyles tajacu and Dicotyles labiatus, or white-lipped peccary; the latter being the larger and fiercer of the two. The peccary is very like a small hog.
Following his example, we prepared others to carry with us, and thus each made up a load of about thirty pounds. The learned name of the animal is Dicotyles tajacu. It eats anything that comes in its way, fruits, roots, reptiles, or eggs; and it is of great service in killing snakes. It will attack the rattlesnake without fear, and easily kills it.
Notwithstanding their learned treatises, it often proves and very often too that these tubercles tell most abominable stories; in plainer terms, that the animals "lie in their teeth." The peccary which the old writers were content to regard as a wild pig, and very properly placed under the genus sus is now termed dicotyles.
