In my own time I have seen Verbeckoeven eclipsed by Van Marcke, Bouguereau, Cabanel, and Gérôme by Manet, and Sir Frederick Leighton by John Sargent a young David slaying the Goliath of English technic with but a wave of his magic brush and, last and by no means least, the great French painter Meissonier by the equally great Spanish master Sorolla.

She loved the pictures of Rembrandt, Frans Hals, Correggio, Titian. And with less discrimination, and more from a sensual point of view the nudes of Cabanel, Bouguereau and Gerome. To her there was reality in the works of these men, lightened by great imagination.

In 1877 and 1878 she exhibited in Boston, "On the Borders of the Marne" and "Peasant House in Normandy." COMERRE-PATON, MME. JACQUELINE. Honorable mention, 1881; medal at Versailles; officer of the Academy. Born at Paris, 1859. Pupil of Cabanel. Her principal works are: "Peau d'Ane, Hollandaise," in the Museum of Lille; "Song of the Wood," Museum of Morlaix; "Mignon," portrait of Mlle.

Mrs. van der Luyden looked more than ever like a Cabanel, and Mrs. Archer, in her grandmother's seed-pearls and emeralds, reminded her son of an Isabey miniature.

As a painter and draughtsman Raphael is perhaps outclassed by Bouguereau, Cabanel or Lefevre of our own time, and as a composer of either decorative or pictorial design he has had superiors. But the work of Raphael possesses the loving unction of real conviction and nothing to which he put his well trained hand failed of the baptism of genius. Through this mark, therefore, it will live forever.
