We merely take a sterilized swab of cotton on the end of a wire, rub it gently over the surface of the throat and tonsils, restore it to its glass tube, smearing it over the surface of some solidified blood-serum placed at the bottom of the tube, close the tube and send it to the nearest laboratory.

"They are," says Sir Joseph Fayrer, "absolutely without any specific effect on the condition produced by the poison." But "anti-venene," as Dr. Fraser calls his immunised blood-serum, follows the poison into the system, even after the fatal symptoms have begun to show themselves, and arrests them at once.

The culture is put into an incubator at body heat, the germs sown upon the surface of the blood-serum grow and multiply, and in twelve hours a positive diagnosis can be made by examining this growth with a microscope.

The changes in the circulation occurring in inflammation are as follows: An increase in the rate of the blood-flow through the blood-vessels of the part and their dilation; diminished velocity followed by the blood-flow becoming entirely suspended; following the retardation or suspension of the blood stream, white blood-corpuscles accumulate along the walls of the small veins and capillaries; white and red blood-corpuscles migrate from the vessels into the neighboring tissue, and blood-serum transudes through the walls of the vessels, forming the inflammatory swellings.
