Sir W. Parish has given me some of these shells, and M. d'Orbigny pronounces them to be: Buccinanops globulosum, d'Orbigny. Olivancillaria auricularia, d'Orbigny. Venus flexuosa, Lam. Mactra Isabellei, d'Orbigny. Ostrea pulchella, d'Orbigny. Voluta colocynthis. Voluta angulata. These shell-beds extend from one league to six leagues from the Plata, and must lie many feet above its level.

Limnæa auricularia is particularly suitable for deep waters, and L. pereger, whose shell is of type 2, is a most valuable addition to the food supply in any fish pond. It is one of the commonest of our fresh-water snails. There are a great many different kinds, and the larger ones should, as a rule, be avoided. Sphæriidæ and Pisidia are probably the best.

Olicancilleria Braziliensis d'Orbigny. 4. Olicancilleria auricularia, d'Orbigny. 5. Olivina puelchana, d'Orbigny. 6. Buccinanops cochlidium, d'Orbigny. 7. Buccinanops globulosum, d'Orbigny. 8. Colombella sertulariarum, d'Orbigny. 9. Trochus Patagonicus, and var. of ditto, d'Orbigny. 10. Paludestrina Australis, d'Orbigny. 11. Fissurella Patagonica, d'Orbigny. 12. Crepidula muricata, Lam. 13.

As to the "homologous insects" of the Upper Miocene period in Switzerland, we find among them, mingled with genera now wholly foreign to Europe, some very familiar forms, such as the common glowworm, Lampyris noctiluca, Linn., the dung-beetle, Geotrupes stercorarius, Linn., the ladybird, Coccinella septempunctata, Linn., the ear-wig, Forficula auricularia, Linn., some of our common dragon-flies, as Libellula depressa, Linn., the honey-bee, Apis mellifera, Linn., the cuckoo spittle insect, Aphrophora spumaria, Linn., and a long catalogue of others, to all of which Professor Heer had given new names, but which some entomologists may regard as mere varieties until some stronger reasons are adduced for coming to a contrary opinion.
