This was a wild winter-station, the danger from the elements greatly surpassing any that could well be anticipated from the enemy.
We now steered for Kangertluksoak, a winter-station of the Esquimaux, where several of our people had pitched their tents. To the north lies Nellekartok, the outermost island on leaving the Ikkerasak, and the first of the Kangertluksoak islands. Seven or eight miles, north of Nappertok, a long flat point runs out, terminated by a small island.
Around rose hills whose sides were covered with the traces of fire-destroyed' forests, and a lake lay close beside us, wrapped in ice and snow. A small winter-station had been established by the Hudson Bay Company at a point some ninety miles distant from Carlton, opposite the junction of the Battle River with the North Saskatchewan.
It finally ended in the ventilation becoming active again without visible cause. There is no doubt that the system of ventilation in a winter-station like ours is of great importance, both to health and comfort. I have read of expeditions, the members of which were constantly suffering from cold and damp and resulting sickness. This is nothing but a consequence of bad ventilation.
