Intermediate forms occur, connecting one group with another in a manner sadly perplexing to systematists, except to those who have ceased to expect absolute limitations in Nature. All this blending could hardly fail to suggest a former material connection among allied forms, such as that which the hypothesis of derivation demands.
The order of Myriapoda is placed by systematists at the bottom of the class of insects; the sucking Myriapods are amongst the lowest forms of the order, and it is singular to find one of these lowly organised species furnished with an apparatus of such utility, and the numberless higher forms without any trace of it.
The first-mentioned is the one which has received most notice both from naturalists and travellers. In redeeming it from this character, other systematists were not content to leave it where it really belongs in the genus ursus but must, forsooth, create a new one for its special accommodation; and it now figures in zoological catalogues as a prochilus the prochilus labiatus!
Systematists have always distinguished between adaptive characters and those of taxonomic value those which show the true affinities and they are perfectly right: also they have always distrusted and held aloof from theories of evolution which profess to explain all characters by one universal formula.
