He rose languidly, with the unpleasant sensation of work unfinished. The row of faces at tea seemed to frighten him. He felt as if he had awakened out of a nightmare, that still held on to him with cold, clammy hands, and was trying to draw him back once more into its web. Visions rose before him of shrieking showmen's booths, blinking with tawdry yellow eyes.

We did not drag our linen through a scent bath nor loll all morning in the hands of a man milliner charged with the duty of turning us into showmen's dummies as was the way of young sparks in that age. But that was how I came to buy yon monstrous wig costing forty guineas and weighing ten pounds and coming half-way to a man's waist.

Showmen's vans, with pictures outside of unknown monsters; merry-go-rounds, nut stalls, gingerbread stalls, cheap Jacks, and latterly photographic "studios"; behind all these the alehouse; the beating of drums and the squalling of pigs, the blowing of horns, and the neighing of horses trotted out for show, the roar of a rude crowd these constitute a country fair.

The village painter was set at work on the new gilding of the chariots in the big barn. "Even if we don't really get away," explained Buck, "it's a good idea to keep the property from running down." But the appearance of the new gilt inflamed their showmen's hearts.

Phil crouched low. He was now only a few feet from the stooping figure. All at once the boy threw himself forward. He landed on the man, forcing him to the ground. As he struck, Phil raised his voice in the showmen's rallying cry. "Hey, Rube!" he shouted in a sing-song voice that was heard in the dressing tents and even out in the menagerie tent.
