One thought that flew across my mind was that Doctor Roycroft was very intimate with the Ryleys, and had doubtless somehow informed them of my aunt's death. This explained Fred Ryley's strange words and attitude to me on the way from the station. The young man had been too timid to stop me. The matter was a trifle, but another idea that struck me was not a trifle, though I strove to make it so.
Mary read a letter from the Peetrees inviting Jim to join them at Blanket Flat where they had taken his and Mike's belongings when he was strong enough to get about. According to Mrs. Ryley's version of this letter, Mike was with the Peetrees.
'You knew nothing of this Ryley business, did you? he murmured. 'Oh, no. Are you sure there's anything in it? I don't think there is for an instant. And she did not. Even the placing of Milly's hand on Fred Ryley's shoulder in full sight of the street, even this she regarded only as the pretty indiscretion of a child. 'Oh! there's nothing in it, she repeated.
