Our quarters were of the simplest, one room for two students, with one wide bed, and there we lived and studied. At half-past five the bell rang to wake us, and half an hour later for prayers, the sleepy ones returning to sleep after the waking bell, and thrusting themselves into their clothes as they ran when the prayer-bell rang, to get to prayers before the roll-call was over.
Nobody had much notion of the sense, but the cadence was soothing, and all were composed by the time the prayer-bell rang. "Come to my dressing-room presently," she said to Lucas, as he lighted her candle for her. Just as she had gone up stairs, the front door opened to admit Bobus. "Oh, you are here!" was his salutation. "So you have done for yourself?" "How do you know?"
I think he bowed; if he did, I had no time to return the courtesy. In a moment he was gone; the moonlit threshold lay pale and shadowless before the closed front door. Gathering in my arms all that was spread on the desk before me, I carried back the unused heap to its place in the third classe. The prayer-bell rang; I obeyed its summons.
