While night and day, in the battle clamor, in the little college class room, on boundless prairie billows, among lonely sand dunes everywhere, he carried the memory of the gentle touch of the hand of a rebel girl, who had visited him when he was sick and in prison. And withal, he resented dictation, as all the Aydelots and Penningtons before him had done.
Why should he tarry in a doomed city, forsaken of God! Is not the command, even to him, "Arise and flee, for thy life"? In some green nook of the quiet country, he may finish the great work which his hands have found to do. He bethinks him of his old friends, the Penningtons, and his young Quaker companion, the patient and gentle Ellwood.
He boarded with the Beckwiths on the Riverside East Shore, but he was nearer Riverside West, and he knew the Penningtons well. He had often been there for bait and milk and had listened times out of mind to Mrs. Pennington's dismal tales of her tribulations with hired girls. She never could get along with them, and they left, on an average, after a fortnight's trial.
They are heroic the Penningtons but whenever I see them I want to cry.... Oh, I can't write this any more. I have been writing letters of sympathy all day. 'Dearest, you would be astonished if you could see me at this moment. I am to-day a full blown group leader. Do you know what that means?
