Stearne himself describes the matter graphically: "For the watching," he writes, "it is not to use violence or extremity to force them to confesse, but onely the keeping is, first, to see whether any of their spirits or familiars come to or neere them; for I have found that if the time be come, the spirit or Impe so called should come, it will be either visible or invisible, if visible, then it may be discerned by those in the Roome, if invisible, then by the party.
Some of the points are these: that a mother shall herself nurse her child, that the child shall be early framed to manners, 'for as the steele is imprinted in the soft waxe, so learning is engraven in ye minde of an young Impe. He is not to hear 'fonde fables or filthy tales. He is to learn to pronounce distinctly and to be kept from 'barbarous talk, that is, no dialect and no slang.
'Did you not send such an Impe to kill my child'? 'Yes, saith she." This sort of thing has been too often done, asserted the virtuous witchfinder. He earnestly did desire that "all Magistrates and Jurors would, a little more than ever they did, examine witnesses about the interrogated confessions." What a cautious, circumspect man was this famous witchfinder!
"Here lies their son, the little boy who wore the armor which you saw over at the castle. The inscription speaks of him as 'That noble impe, the young Lord Denbigh, their infant son and heir. 'Impe' in those days had no such meaning of mischievous as we give it to-day. It then simply signified a young boy."
