This seems the place named Pontonchan in the former voyage. These were probably swivel guns mounted on the bows of their boats. According to Clavigero, I. 240, the proper name of this Mexican sovereign was Moteuczoma. Named Tezcatlipoca by Clavigero, and said to be the god of providence, the soul of the world, and the creator of all things.

Clavigero attempts to invest the Aztecs with a breakfast, but he was unable to find any evidence of a supper. The "gruel of maize" here mentioned as forming usually the Aztec breakfast suggests the "hominy of the Iroquois," which, like it, was not unlikely kept constantly prepared in every Mexican house as a lunch for the hungry.

According to Clavigero, II. 7. this armament, by which a great and populous empire was subverted, consisted of eleven vessels, carrying 1O9 mariners, 508 soldiers, divided into eleven companies, ten field-pieces, four falconets, and sixteen horses. Alaminos, who had been pilot to Cordavo and Grijalva, was chief pilot of this expedition.

It would be interesting to have these dogs compared with the hairless dogs of China, which Humboldt says have certainly been extremely common since very early times. Perhaps another link might be added to the broken chain of evidence that connects the peoples of the two countries. A large naked dog-like animal is figured by Clavigero as one of the indigenous animals of Mexico.
