We found plenty of stones with yellow specks in them, but none of that rich goodly hue which makes a man certain that what he has found is gold. We did not wash any of the gravel, for we had no tin dish, neither did we know how to wash. The specks we found were mica; but I believe I am right in saying that there are large quantities of chromate of iron in the ranges that descend upon the river.
Ordinary samples are not sufficiently accurate to allow the use of this method. The methods of reducing with iron and titrating this with chromate of potassa, etc., have given a constant average of from 98.60-99.01. These results are fair, but hard to obtain expeditiously.
In the second case are the Molybdates and molybdic acid; the Chromates, including red lead ore from the Siberian gold mines of Beresof; chromate of lead and copper, and crome iron from Var, in France; the Borates, including borates of magnesia, and borate of soda, or borax.
