I was so fortunate as to see a pair of lions, but at such a distance, that I cannot say whether they exceeded in beauty and size those in European menageries. Among the birds, the pelicans were so polite as to make their respects to us by scraping. 21st May. Today we saw the ruins of the palace of Khuszew Anushirwan at Ctesiphon.
The 12th book was written for Hormaz, son of Kisra, i.e., Kisra Anushirwan on the correspondence between a certain Kisra and "Jamasp." On the Persian wisdom of Jamasp, see C.H.L. Flise, cher Kleinere Schriften 3 Leipzig, 1888, 254-255, and Justi Namenbuch, 109. In the same book 162, 6, instead of Zaydyud should be read Zaiduya.
Archaeologists are now agreed that the engraving on the gem, which exactly resembles the figure upon the peculiar coins above described, represents Chosroes Anushirwan, and is of his age. There is no sufficient reason to doubt but that the cup itself is one out of which he was accustomed to drink. It is the great glory of Anushirwan that the title which his subjects gave him was "the Just."
And among their books there is one entitled the Khudhay to which they pay great reverence, in which it is related that king Anushirwan prohibited the teaching of their religion in any one of the cities except Ardeshir Khurrah and the religion spread from Datjird.
