In certain minds there seems always to lurk some remains of Pelagianism, a hydra from which though bruised and crushed by the Church the pillar and bulwark of the Truth new heads are ever springing forth.
This again has enabled us to make out and define the sphere of the divine power, as well as that of the human; and to determine the point at which they come into contact, without interfering with or intersecting each other. The same means have also shown us, that the opposite errors of Pelagianism and Augustinism have a common root in a false psychology.
Now had it not been for Augustine, a profound thinker, a man of boundless influence and authority, it is not unlikely that Pelagianism would have taken so deep a root in the mind of Christendom, especially in the hearts of princes and nobles, that it would have become the creed of the Church.
