The lyric school, founded by Ludwig Uhland, alone preserved a German spirit and a connection with the ancient Minnelieder of Swabia. The new cosmopolitic tendency of the poetry of these times is chiefly due to the influence exercised by Goethe.

Exquisite songsters, and those, strangely, of an European type, may be heard anywhere in tropical American forests: but native races whose hearts their song can touch, are either extinct or yet to come. Some of the old German Minnelieder, on the other hand, seem actually copied from the songs of birds.

It was also owing to their exertions that Mueller published an edition of Rudiger Maness's collection of Swabian Minnelieder, the connecting link between modern and ancient German poetry. Still, notwithstanding their merit as critics, they were no poets, and merely opened to others the road to improvement.

In 1803 he published a graceful little volume of typical Minnelieder, renewed from the middle high-German period. All the motives of the old court-lyric are well represented the torments and rewards of love, the charm of spring, the refinements of courtly breeding and the sophisticated metrical forms are handled with great virtuosity.
