The uncultivated parts were covered with forest and often infested by robbers. The spot where the Buddha was born was known as the Lumbini Park and the site, or at least what was supposed to be the site in Asoka's time, is marked by a pillar erected by that monarch at a place now called Rummindei . His mother was named Mâyâ and was also of the Sâkya clan.

At last, when she was fifty years old, her day came and she went forth that she might be among her own people when her baby should come into this world. It was a long trip to the land of the Koliyans, where Maha Maya had spent her earliest years. One night she was resting among the cool trees of the garden of Lumbini. There her son was born.

And vacuity he pondered unceasingly for, in this train, emptiness rode in him as he was riding in it. Vientiane, he derided, was not a destination any more than the Buddha's Lumbini forest.

Disliking the clamorous ways of the world, she remembered the excellent garden of Lumbini, a pleasant spot, a quiet forest retreat, with its trickling fountains, and blooming flowers and fruits.

A tope was erected at this last place, which is still existing. Several li northeast from the city was the king's field, where the heir-apparent sat under a tree, and looked at the ploughers. Fifty li east from the city was a garden, named Lumbinî, where the queen entered the pond and bathed.

Several le north-east from the city was the king's field, where the heir-apparent sat under a tree, and looked at the ploughers. Fifty le east from the city was a garden, named Lumbini, where the queen entered the pond and bathed. Other places in connexion with them became remarkable, according to the manifestations which were made at them at particular times.

In the garden of Lumbinî, filling the spaces between the trees, rare and special flowers, in great abundance, bloomed out of season. All cruel and malevolent kinds of beings, together conceived a loving heart; all diseases and afflictions among men without a cure applied, of themselves were healed.

He then enters the womb of his mother Mâyâ in the shape of a white elephant, which event she sees in a dream. Brahmans are summoned and interpret the vision to mean that her son will be a Universal Monarch or a Buddha. When near her confinement Mâyâ goes to visit her parents but on the way brings forth her son in the Lumbini grove.
