In 1914 he was honoured by his fellow-countrymen in being elected as a member of the Academie francaise. He was also made President of the Academie des Sciences morales et politiques, and in addition he became Officier de la Legion d'Honneur, and Officier de l'Instruction publique.
Nevertheless, it is one of the intellectual headquarters of France, indeed of the whole world. While the Sorbonne is now the seat of the University of Paris, the College is an independent institution under the control of the Ministre de l'Instruction publique.
The well- known Jesuit map of Lake Superior appeared the year after. Besides making the map, Galinee wrote a very long and minute journal of the expedition, which is preserved in the Bibliotheque Imperiale. Much of the substance of it is given by Faillon, Colonie Francaise, iii. chap, vii., and Margry, Journal General de l'Instruction Publique, xxxi. No. 67.
Margry, in a series of papers in the Journal General de l'Instruction Publique for 1862, first took the position that La Salle reached the Mississippi in 1670 and 1671, and has brought forward in defence of it all the documents which his unwearied research enabled him to discover.
In March, 1876, W. was made, for the second time, "Ministre de l'Instruction Publique et des Beaux Arts," with M. Dufaure President du Conseil, Duc Decazes at the Foreign Office, and Leon Say at the finances. His nomination was a surprise to us. We didn't expect it at all. There had been so many discussions, so many names put forward.
In relation to these disputes, I have received much aid from the research of Abbe Faillon, and from the valuable paper of Abbe Verreau, Les deux Abbes de Fenelon, printed in the Canadian Journal de l'Instruction Publique, Vol. While writing to Frontenac in terms of studied mildness, the king and Colbert took measures to curb his power.
