The uprising had spread from the Waes country and the ancient seignory of Malines, around Louvain as far as Tirlemont, and afterward to Brussels, to Campine, to South Brabant, to Flanders, to Luxembourg, in the Ardennes, and even to the frontiers of Liege; many villages had to be burned, and many of their inhabitants killed, and the survivors keep this in mind.

A retired colonel of the Prussian army, Van der Meersch, was chosen as the commander of the three thousand badly equipped volunteers massed along the Dutch frontier. On October 23rd he occupied Hoogstraeten, in the Campine, and issued a manifesto in which Joseph II was declared to have forfeited his rights.

In 1849, the unimproved portion of the Campine was estimated at little less than three hundred and fifty thousand acres. The quantity of land annually reclaimed on the Campine is stated at about 4,000 acres. There are still unsubdued sand wastes in many parts of interior Europe not familiarly known to tourists or even geographers.

The rising, begun in the Pays de Waes, spread to Brabant, and especially to the Campine. The repression, entrusted to General Jardon, was merciless. Most of the leaders were shot and their followers dispersed after heavy losses. The rule of Napoleon restored peace to the Low Countries. The emperor carried the war far from the Belgian frontiers.

They once compoaed a forest of 1,200,000 acres, but by clearing the woods have relapsed into their primitive condition of a barren sand waste. In the northern part of Belgium, and extending across the confines of Holland, is another very similar heath plain, called the Campine.
