John had fixed the scene of his activity in that part of the desert of Judea which is in the neighborhood of the Dead Sea. At the periods when he administered baptism, he went to the banks of the Jordan, either to Bethany or Bethabara, upon the eastern shore, probably opposite to Jericho, or to a place called Ænon, or "the Fountains," near Salim, where there was much water.
But Jesus escaped from their hands, and went away to the land beyond Jordan, at the place called "Bethabara," or "Bethany beyond Jordan," the same place where he had been baptized by John the Baptist more than two years before. From this place Jesus wished to go out through the land in the east of the Jordan, a land which is called "Perea," a word that means "beyond."
These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptising. The next day John seeth Jesus coming to him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, who taketh away the sin of the world, This is he of whom I spake, After me cometh a man who was before me: for before me he existed. And I knew him not: though that he might be manifested to Israel, therefore am I come baptising with water.
