The name of Welsch or Wallons, given them by the Germans, was the same as Galli, which they had received from the Latins, and as Keltai or Celts, which they themselves acknowledged.
Italy, as you are aware, is called by the Germans Welschland, or the land of the Welschers; and I may add that Wallachia derives its name from a colony of Welschers which Trajan sent there. Welsch and Wallack being one and the same word, and tantamount to Latin." "I dare say you are right," said I; "but why was Italy termed Welschland?" "I do not know," said the Hungarian.
Scotch, the sorriest of jargons, compared with which even Roth Welsch is dignified and expressive, has yet one word to express what would be inexpressible by any word or combination of words in any language, or in any other jargon in the world; and very properly; for as the nonsense is properly Scotch, so should the word be Scotch which expresses it that word is "fushionless," pronounced fooshionless; and when the writer has called the nonsense fooshionless and he does call it fooshionless he has nothing more to say, but leaves the nonsense to its fate.
