There were no rocky cliffs, like giants, guarding the land; only a long reach of soft white sand, with which I was never tired of playing making forts with moats round them to keep off the enemy; or gardens with straight paths, and trim beds in which I planted sea-daisies and poppies. It seemed as if there was nothing about this shore strong enough to keep back the great waves.
Slopes of rank grass and sea-daisies tufted the rocks on this side, divided by certain deep hollows which the action of the waves had honeycombed here and there; and below the grass was the shore, powdered thickly with sand, of a fine, light, and sparkling colour, like gold dust.
The scent of the wild thyme growing in prolific patches at his feet, the more pungent odour of the tall daisies which were of a hardy, free-flowering kind, the "strong sea-daisies that feast on the sun," and the indescribable salty perfume that swept upwards on the faint wind from the unseen ocean, just now hidden by projecting shelves of broken ground fringed with trees, all combined together to refresh the air and to make the mere act of breathing a delight.
