Schleiden had even supposed the nucleus to be a constituent part of the wall, sometimes lying enclosed between two layers of its substance, and Schwann quoted this view with seeming approval. Schwann believed, however, that in the mature cell the nucleus ceased to be functional and disappeared.

I mean, the causes and the effects of their beauty; that 'AEsthetic of plants, of which Schleiden has spoken so well in that charming book of his, The Plant, which all should read who wish to know somewhat of 'The Open Secret. But when they read it, let them read with open hearts.

He asserted that the nucleus of the cell lies within this substance and not attached to the cell wall as Schleiden had contended. He saw, too, that the chlorophyl granules, and all other of the cell contents, are incorporated with the "opaque, viscid fluid," and in 1846 he had become so impressed with the importance of this universal cell substance that he gave it the name of protoplasm.

Perhaps Gustav Jäger, Schleiden, Bernhard Cotta at least judging from their earlier publications should be mentioned as followers of the pure selection theory; although they do not all draw from it the before-mentioned philosophic consequences.

The tea-tree in China, from its marked effect on the human constitution, has long been an agent of superstition, and been associated with the following legend, quoted by Schleiden.

M. J. Schleiden, to bring the nucleus to popular attention, and to assert its all-importance in the economy of the cell. Schleiden freely acknowledged his indebtedness to Brown for first knowledge of the nucleus, but he soon carried his studies of that structure far beyond those of its discoverer.

Then at once he reasoned that if there really is the correspondence between vegetable and animal tissues that he suspected, and if the nucleus is so important in the vegetable cell as Schleiden believed, the nucleus should also be found in the ultimate particles of animal tissues. Schwann's researches soon showed the entire correctness of this assumption.

Schleiden confirms the opinion of Vaupell, and adds many important observations on this subject.
