Unfortunately the names of places are very incorrectly given in the best maps of Central America, every traveller having spelt them phonetically according to the orthography of his own language. Throughout this book I have spelt proper names in accordance with the pronunciation of the Spanish letters.
Every word was at once written down, spelled phonetically and arranged in alphabetic order, and a note appended as to the circumstances in which it was used.
She was sorry for Geoffrey, against whom she had no ill feeling, but it could not be helped; he must be sacrificed. That very evening she wrote her letter and sent it to be posted by an old servant living in London. It was a master-piece in its way, especially phonetically.
I very quickly encountered a repulse, if she were in the thrall. She would wave her hand palm outward before her face a mistake of meaning impossible. Now she had only learned to write two years before, this detail purposely postponed. I did not undertake to correct spelling, permitting her to spell phonetically, and to use a word she was in doubt of.
See Jensen's valuable articles, "The Queen in the Babylonian Hades and her Consort," in the Sunday School Times, March 13 and 20, 1897. The text is published, Winckler and Abel, Der Thontafelfund von El-Amarna, iii. 164, 165. Written phonetically e-ri-ish. The word is entered as a synonym of sharratum, 'queen, VR. 28, no. 2; obverse 31.
The Innuit or Eskimo were called by the original Norse explorers "Skraelingjar," or dwarfs, a name now converted by the Innuit into "karalit," which is the nearest approach that they are able to make phonetically to the former term. They are certainly, on the average, a people of less than middle stature, yet they can in no sense be described as Pigmies.
