He took it, turned it upside down, and tried hard to read it; but his literary attainments not being adequate to the task, he applied for relief to the clerk, a sleek, smiling Frenchman, named Montalon. Though not deficient in hospitable intentions, he was wholly unaccustomed to act as master of ceremonies.
The nearest chateau to us is Montalon, where Madame de Sevigne used to live, and from which she wrote some of her letters.
We were sitting, on the following morning, in the passage-way between the gates, conversing with the traders Vaskiss and May. These two men, together with our sleek friend, the clerk Montalon, were, I believe, the only persons then in the fort who could read and write.
Then we made the whole distance to Petit Val on foot, passing by the chateaux of Ormesson, Chenvieres, Grand Val, and Montalon. All the chateaux we passed are utterly abandoned, some quite in ruins; one can see, for instance, right through beautiful Grand Val, bereft of windows and doors. But worse was awaiting me!
