For in 1658 his son, Aurungzebe, deposed him and for the rest of his life he was imprisoned in these walls. His grandfather, Akbar, the other great Agra builder, was made of sterner stuff. All Shah Jahan's creations the Taj, the marble mosque, the palaces both here and at Delhi, even the great Jama Masjid at Delhi, have a certain sensuous quality.

Above all, in the far distance towered the Jama Masjid, or Great Mosque, its three huge domes of pure white marble, with two high minarets, dwarfing into insignificance the buildings by which it was surrounded surely, the noblest work of art ever built by man for the service of the Creator.

To him Delhi owes its stately palace and vast mosque the Jama Masjid and Agra would be famous for its wonderful palace of dark red stone and fretted marble, even without that masterpiece of Mohammedan inspiration, the world-famed Taj Mahal.

Reached Koel, or Allyghur, at eight A.M. Started again at five, stopping on the way to inspect the Jama Musjid, and a very fine old tower, probably of Buddhist or Jain origin, which was covered over with ancient inscriptions. Just as the Muezzin was calling to evening prayer, we again resumed our monotonous order of travel, and branched off towards Agra to visit the famous Taj Mahul.

A few paces further and a third drop led us again to the swampy valley of the Nánwá, here flowing south. It is bounded by two rises, tree-grown from foot to head. That on the left bank is the Tuáko, the husband, along whose skirt we have been walking; the other, on the opposite side, is Jama, the wife. From their conjugal visits the gold is born.
