On the other hand, extensive tracts towards the south are almost barren. The bustard and florikan appear here. The Nomads possess large flocks of sheep, the camels, cows, and goats being chiefly found at this season on the seaward side of the hills, where forage is procurable. The horses were stunted tattoos, tolerably well-bred, but soft for want of proper food.
There were a great number of gazelles and antelopes, some bustard, many florikan and partridges, as well as other very interesting birds and reptiles. These were mostly found in ravines at the foot of the hills, or amongst acacia and jujube trees, with patches of heather in places. We now held durbar, to consult on the plan of proceeding.
A young hen makes a particularly fine dish at table: the flesh of the breast is full of triangular cavities. The Bustard accordingly bears a high price in the Indian markets: in some districts it is called the florikan. Mag. Nat. Hist. vol. iii. p. 517.
