She was what the French call a detraquee; she had enjoyed good intelligence and an active mind, but her wits had left the rails and were careening about the country.
I think she must be détraquée.... I have a faint hope that by taking her in hand and interesting her in our work which entre nous deux is turning out to be very profitable I may sober her and regularize her. No doubt in 1950 most women will talk as she does to-day, but the advance is too abrupt. It not only robs her parents of all happiness, but it upsets my mother.
"No, because dear old Jo! it's so funny she's quite without art. But she's always been frightfully keen on men, though she never could attract the right sort; and for some reason or other to do with the farm, I suppose she's never been keen on marriage. Now lately I've been thinking she really ought to marry lately she's been getting quite queer détraquée and I do think she ought to settle down."
