There we rose about midday, but, observing a hydroplane at no great distance, we sank again for half an hour. When we came up for the second time, all was peaceful around us, and the English coast was lining the whole western horizon. We kept outside the Goodwins and straight down Channel until we saw a line of black dots in front of us, which I knew to be the Dover-Calais torpedo- boat cordon.
Down to the Battle of the Marne in September, 1914, very little difficulty was made about crossing the Channel, especially off the main Dover-Calais route.
Afterward they made their way, along the departure platform, to the Dover-Calais train. They took their seats. Muriel Colwood knew felt it indeed, through every nerve that the girl with her was still watching, still hoping, still straining each bodily perception in a listening expectancy. The train was very full, and the platform crowded with friends, luggage, and officials.
"Look at the gray-backs chivying her," said he. "Aren't the passengers just sorry for themselves now? I've listened to those tales of desperate adventure by the hour together. Passengers by Dover-Calais packets are great at 'em." All this while we were closing up.
