On the 6th December, we arose late to avoid the cold morning air, and at 7 A.M. set out over rough ground, hoping to ascend the Ghauts that day. After creeping about two miles, the camels, unable to proceed, threw themselves upon the earth, and we unwillingly called a halt at Jiyaf, a basin below the Dobo fiumara.
On the following day we stopped at Dobo, one of the Posts of the Mongala Company, which has been taken over by the State. The Company found it was very difficult to make the people work and some serious charges of cruelty were proved against the officials.
Patches of this plant situated on moist ground at the foot of hills, are favourite places with sand antelope, spur-fowl and other game. The Darnel or pod has a sweetish taste, not unlike that of a withered pea; pounded and mixed with milk or ghee, it is relished by the Bedouins when vegetable food is scarce. Dobo in the Somali tongue signifies mud or clay.
"Now," said the Minister, "we shall take quite another route so that the Colonel will wait in vain for us at Khazahuduk." We turned north at Undur Dobo and at night were in the camp of a local prince.
