The idea of classical erudition, as maintained by them, is extended far beyond its common limitation, and is connected with researches respecting not the language only, but also the religion, philosophy, social economy, arts, and sciences of ancient nations. Among the other great writers on ancient history are Boeckh, Duncker, Droysen, Mommsen, and Kortuem.
The first Langham opened had a Latin dedication in a quavering old man's hand, 'Amico et discipulo meo, signed 'Fredericus Gulielmus Schelling. The next bore the autograph of Alexander von Humboldt, the next that of Boeckh, the famous classic, and so on.
The secret of the recent histories in German and in English is the discovery, owed first to Wolff, and later to Boeckh, that the sincere Greek history of that period must be drawn from Demosthenes, specially from the business orations, and from the comic poets.
During this stay at the Prussian capital, in the years 1855 and 1856, I heard the lectures of Lepsius, on Egyptology; August Boeckh, on the History of Greece; Friedrich von Raumer, on the History of Italy; Hirsch, on Modern History in general; and Carl Ritter, on Physical Geography. The lectures of Ranke, the most eminent of German historians, I could not follow.
