On the 19th of September, Gen. McClellan was informed that during the night Lee had pulled out, and placed the Potomac between him and us. The Army of Northern Virginia crossed the river at Shepardstown. Thus ended their proud invasion of Northern States. We remained in our position for a number of days, burying the dead, picking up the fragments, and getting ourselves together.
A series of timbered-covered hills surrounded this ridge; some of the adjacent hills had been cleared of the forest, and were covered with orchards and cornfields, enclosed with fences of rails or stone. Behind this ridge runs the road from Hagerstown to Sharpsburg and Shepardstown. Sharpsburg is just in the rear of the ridge. Along these hills the rebel lines were posted, four miles in extent.
It is quite natural that such cases as this should attract the attention of the laity, and often find report in newspapers. The following is a lay-report of a "snake-boy" in Shepardstown, Va.: "Jim Twyman, a colored boy living with his foster-parents ten miles from this place, is a wonder. He is popularly known as the "snake-boy."
The Sixty-first lost in killed and wounded about one-third of its number, and so was again reduced to the size of a full company. Some one discovered on the 19th for "Little Mac," the "Young Napolean" that the enemy had, during the night, fallen back and crossed the Potomac at Shepardstown.
