The pear trees extended, like green fences, their serried rows of prickle-laden leaves; the century-plants opened like a profusion of bayonets, blackish or salmon-red in color; the old agaves shot their stalks into the air straight as masts, which were topped by extended branches that gave them the appearance of telegraph poles.

Tube salmon-red; petals red, centre purplish. Tube white; petals carmine, margined with violet-purple.

The branchlets are exactly the same as those of E. truncatum, but the flowers are not like Epiphyllum at all, resembling rather those of Cereus or Phyllocactus. They are brilliant scarlet in colour, shaded with violet. Tube rosy-violet; petals dark red. Tube and base of petals white, rest salmon-red, shaded with purple. Tube and base of petals white; tips of petals carmine.

The background of cliffs and hills, as seen in the photograph, will serve to give some idea of the beauty of the surroundings, an arid beauty, it is true, for all is desert. There is not a blade of vegetation near; all is salmon-red in colour beneath a sky of ineffable blue, and against the red cliffs the white temple stands out in vivid contrast.

His general color is hoary ash, paler, almost white, below, giving out a slight iridescence in the sunshine; his wings are blackish, with white trimmings; his flanks are stained with salmon-red, and when his wings are spread, there appears a large blotch of scarlet at the inner angle of the intersection with the body.

Flowers as in Cereus grandiflorus, 8 in. to 10 in. across, very fragrant; petals white; sepals yellow, brownish outside. Branches three-angled; flowers with short, linear, incurved sepals; petals long, broad, arranged like a tube, colour salmon-red. Flowers 6 in. long and broad, nodding, white. Branches three-angled; flowers large, sepals bright purple; petals broad, purple, tinged with scarlet.

Length about five and a half inches. Upper parts shining black, marked on the wings and tail with rich salmon-red. Under parts shining black on the neck and breast, bright salmon-red on the sides, and pinkish-white on the belly. In the female all the parts which are black in her mate are light greenish-gray, and she is clear yellow where he is red.
