Cordially disliking everybody present, I marched down the length of the room, and took a corner table, which was laid for four. On the sparkling snow of the damask cloth burned a bonfire of scarlet geraniums, and two red-shaded wax candles, of the kind which the Boy used to call "candles with nostrils," made wavering rose-lights on the white expanse.
It dropped like a trickle of cold water into his excitement and desire. He took Roselle's arm lightly in his hand, and turned about. "I must take you to tea somewhere," he said; "where shall we go?" In a shaded tea room, full of screens, rose-lights and china tinkling, he sat looking at her.
The fiesta was slipping out of the present into the past, where it would live still under the rose-lights of memory. There was a scurry of little feet in the rose-garden. A door slammed somewhere and hushed the sound of sobbing.
