In compliance with my request, the following definition of "Perfectionism" was written out for me as authoritative: "The bare doctrine of Perfectionism might be presented in a single sentence thus: "As the doctrine of temperance is total abstinence from alcoholic drinks, and the doctrine of anti-slavery is immediate abolition of human bondage, so the doctrine of Perfectionism is immediate and total cessation from sin.
In a letter to her sister on this subject, she thus expresses herself: "As to 'perfectionism' or 'sinlessness, I have all along, and over and over again, said I never did and do not hold either. 'Sinlessness' belongs only to Christ now, and to our glorified state in heaven.
The fight against the evils of drink, as it has been carried on for a century or more, has been animated by a moral fervor which classes it rather with the fight against slavery, or with the great revivals of religion, than with those movements which owe their origin to a calculating and cold-blooded perfectionism.
Yet it seems significant that judgments of worth do not appear out of place in comparing such things. PERFECTIONISM AND INTUITIONISM. Taking into consideration all that is said above, it seems not unreasonable to conclude: That in speaking of the perfection of any creature we very often judge it only by the standard set by its own type. We regard it as a good specimen of its kind.
