Once, when Dale had stopped thus to talk to Mr. Maghull, there were two field-laborers leaning against a gate and discussing people as they passed. Neither of them was a Baptist. One was a stupid old man, and his would-be-funny chatter, at which the other kept guffawing, bothered Dale in his serious conversation with Mr. Maghull. "Be that little Norrer Veale?" "I dunno."

Osborn, "it is fairly lighting-up time, and that no one can accuse us of being extravagant if we call for the match-boxes. Brother Maghull, please get to work. And, yes, you too, Brother Hartley, if you will. You're always a dab at regulating them."

The Henries are producing a special lens for the work; Mr. Grubb is constructing a special Cassgrain reflector for Mr. Roberts of Maghull; and the Admiralty have instructed Mr. Woods to make this part of his work at the Cape Observatory, under the able direction of Dr. Gill. Besides star maps, clusters, too, and special portions of the heavens are being photographed by the Rev.

A picture of the Pleiades procured at Maghull in eighty-nine minutes, October 23, 1886, revealed nebulous surroundings to no less than four leading stars of the group, namely, Alcyone, Electra, Merope, and Maia; and a second impression, taken in three hours on the following night, showed further "that the nebulosity extends in streamers and fleecy masses till it seems almost to fill the spaces between the stars, and to extend far beyond them."
