A glorious band, gathering, twining, shooting past each other, jousting, tilting, with blazing banners, and a field broader than that of the "Cloth of Gold"; for this reached to and mingled with the clouds yea, tinted them with flame-color and roses, and garlanded the earth with crimson blossoms that nestled among her forests on the far-off horizon. What a wide field, indeed!

And Scroggs, whose countenance lost a shade of its natural flush, going from flame-color to salmon hue, bent with sudden apprehension over a small hand which hung from the seat. "No; it's only a swoon," he continued, relieved, feeling her wrist with his knobby fingers. "How she struggled! If it hadn't been for smothering her with the cloak but the job's done and that's the end of it."

Around him the frost-smitten aspens were shivering in the wind, their sparse leaves dangling like coins of red-and-yellow gold, and all the billowing land below, to the west, was iridescent with green and flame-color and crimson. A voiceless regret, a dim, wide-reaching, wistful sadness came over him, but did not shake his resolution.

"No wait!" she cried, before he had touched the two lower bars. She urged the mare forward a couple of strides, and then the animal lifted over the bars in a clean little jump. The man's eyes sparkled, and he clapped his hands. "You beauty! you beauty!" the girl cried, leaning forward impulsively in the saddle and pressing her cheek to the mare's neck where it burned flame-color in the sun.
