SPATANGUS ELONGATUS, pl. 6. f. 2. Body elongate, cordate, with a deep anterior grove and notch; covered above with minute hair-like spines, with scattered very elongated tubular minutely striated spines on the sides; the anterior groves and circumference of the vent with larger equal hair-like spines on each side; the under surface with a triangular disk of similar spines beneath the vent, and with elongated larger tubular spines.
In Tillus elongatus the male is black, and the female always, as it is believed, of a dark blue colour, with a red thorax. The male, also, of Orsodacna atra, as I hear from Mr. Bates's collection, are generally redder but rather duller than the females, the latter being coloured of a more or less splendid golden-green.
The number of Heteromerides amounts only to four; namely, one Boros of the arched form of the elongatus, a small Phaleria, a pale yellow Anaspis, and a small black, flat beetle with overgrown wing-cases of a new form, which must be reckoned among the family of the Blapides.
