And presenting the letter to me, the statesman said: "Would you like to see a specimen of the sort of documents which go on file in the departments, colonel?" I took the letter, and read the following words: "RICHMOND, 18 Dec'r, 1864.

"To Hosa Mansfield, daughter of John and Martha Mansfield, died 24th May 1710, aged 26 years. Also James Mansfield, son of John and Martha Mansfield, died 30th Dec'r 1746, aged 48 years." The work in this instance is crude, and apparently done by an inexpert craftsman. The stone is, however, decayed, and it is possible that it is the draughtsman who has blundered.

In another letter Amherst describes this sad affair more fully. Further confirmation of the charge of barbarity is found in the journal of Rev. Jacob Bailey of Pownalboro, Maine. This gentleman had occasion to lodge at Norwood's Inn, in the town of Lynn, Massachusetts, on the night of Dec'r 13, 1759, and speaking of the company he found there says: "We had among us a soldier belonging to Capt.

"Dear Sir, Your letter of the 13 Dec'r. was particularly agreeable to me, as it acquainted me with your resolution to resume your historic pen, and to undertake a subject which, from its importance and extent, and your manner of treating it, will be highly acceptable to the public.
