Now it flows without a sound by the forest, where the imagination places the fairy people and the sylvan deities; now it roars in the shadow of the castle-crowned and savage rock, over which the solitary hawk circles and repeats its melancholy cry; now it seems to sleep like a blue lake in the midst of a broad, fair valley, where in the sunny fields the flocks feed drowsily.
The foreground of this landscape was formed by the hill, castle-crowned than which there is none in the world more beautiful or more renowned. In short, Olive Rothesay shared with many a king and hero the honour of her place of nativity. She was born at Stirling. Perhaps this circumstance of birth has more influence over character than many matter-of-fact people would imagine.
Far away to the right, Holy Island, with the castle-crowned rock of Bamborough beyond it, are prominent objects; and at night, the Longstone light on the Outer Farne recalls the heroic rescue by Grace Darling of the shipwrecked crew of the Forfarshire. Opposite this window stood the large bookcase in which Dr. Cairns's library was housed.
Then it tore down between the castle-crowned heights, sweeping away the villages on the river banks from Bingen to Coblentz, lashing the projecting rocks of the Lorelei, and carrying off houses, churches, and old abbeys in a rush of ruin.
