Where a monastery was rich enough to indulge in luxuries of "modern improvements and all the best appliances," there was hardly any limit to the architectural freaks that might be indulged in. There were the infirmary and the hospital; the calefactory or warming apparatus, the recreation hall and the winter hall, the locutorium and the common hall, and I know not what besides.

When this was over, after a further short interval the evening reading or Collation took place in the chapter-house, after which the monks were at liberty to go and warm themselves at the one great fire kept up for the purpose in the calefactory; and then compline was sung, followed by Our Lady's Anthem. This for Chris was one of the climaxes of the day's emotions.

On the south side were the Cloisters, the open-air work-place and recreation place of the monks, while beyond were the conventual buildings such as the calefactory or warming-house, the dormitories, and the refectory or room where meals were taken.

From the similarity of arrangement in the buildings of religious houses, however, we can, with great certainty, assign the sites for the various parts the dormitory over the cellarage, to the west of the cloister garth; the refectory to south of it; the calefactory, chapter-house, slype, to the east; and the prior's lodgings to the south of the choir, forming the lesser garth; the barns, bakery, and brew-house to the south-west of the church, near the porter's lodge and gatehouse.
