Bandelier, Fewkes and a dozen others who have identified his itinerary, say this was not Casa Grande. Even by 1540, Casa Grande was an abandoned ruin. This misconception has stood, through American indolence, quite as long as it deserves to stand. With the new light thus thrown upon the subject, this chapter should have been re-written.

I had adopted the ingenious theory of my friend Bandelier that the serrated edge of the Aztec sword was accidental; resulting from the breaking away in use of portions of what at first was a continuous edge of obsidian.
